We stayed in Chapel Cottage in early July 2025 and had a serious issue with ants and flying ants inside the cottage in both the front bay window seats. We have already written reviews on a couple of sites re our stay here to which the company have also replied too. I wanted to address firstly some of their comments which we do disagree with some of their points they have made . I was never abusive to their staff when ringing and complaining about the issue after we arrived. I think this is unfair of them to say this. I was not happy at all about the issue we found re the ants which I think anyone would have been unhappy about this on the start of their holiday. Also they made it seem like we did not have a big issue as when they arrived to address the problem, after my phonecall they did not see any flying ants at the cottage. The reason for this is because the staff of company they came in a morning to address the issue we had with the ants. The flying ants and normal ants came around 6.30-9.30pm every night which of course they would not have seen any of these ants when they came in the morning as by then we had hoovered them all up and cleaned the bay window. All that they did do was fill in some of the cracks round the window and masked taped those up which they left rather a few and so the flying ants and ants kept coming back each night. Plus they have never addressed in their reply to our previous reviews why this is never advised to potential guests at the time of booking being they are totally aware of this issue. Guests are only advised of this when arriving at the cottage from their guest book and the ant powder which was left by the bay window. I think for transparency this needs to be advised at time of booking so people can make their own choices as to coming in the warmer months and not when guests have already arrived and paid their money in full. The Company's quote’ This is not a persistent pest issue, but an act of nature that can affect any home, particularly during a short window of warm, humid weather’ Also they quoted ‘ We always aim to be transparent, and we’re sorry you felt this situation should have been stated more clearly before booking. As it is a seasonal, weather-related occurrence that may or may not happen each year, and affects many properties across the UK, we do not list it as a permanent issue.’ So from their quotes above why don't they advise guests of this potential issue at time booking if they aim to be transparent? The issue to us was a serious one re the flying ants and ants in the bay window of this 300 year old cottage which we experienced from the first night we arrived and there after every night from around 6.00pm till 9.30pm. This was very distressing to us as the cottage location was lovely and we had lovely warm weather while we were there. However we were not able to sit and relax in the lounge for one night of our holiday which was distressing and made us very anxious, as each night we had to hoover up and clean the window as it was a consistent mess and not nice to look at as they kept falling into the bay window seat, the carpet and onto the sofa. Would anyone like this on their holiday? No I don’t think they would. The company spoke to the owner about our issue and we were given a very small good will gesture refund. This was rather disappointing and we felt this was not really adequate for the stress and upset this had caused us for our one holiday of the year.

Response

Dear Guest We are sorry to hear that your stay at Chapel Cottage did not meet your expectations and that the presence of seasonal flying ants affected your enjoyment. Chapel Cottage is a 380-year-old cob-built property in a rural location, and as with many homes across the UK, it can very occasionally experience flying ants for a short period during hot, humid weather. This is a natural phenomenon, not a permanent pest issue, and some years there are none at all.As soon as you reported seeing ants, we offered to attend the property that same day, but this was declined. You later contacted our out-of-hours emergency line in distress. While we appreciate this was upsetting for you, our team must ensure all calls remain calm and respectful. We followed up the next morning and visited promptly. At the time of our visit, there were no ants present inside, but we still applied additional powder and sealed small cracks in the bay window to prevent further entry. We do not list this as a permanent issue on the website as it is seasonal, weather-dependent, and cannot be predicted in advance. Our welcome book includes guidance so that, in the unlikely event they appear, guests know exactly what to do and where to find treatment products. While the ants you experienced were limited to the bay window area and not widespread, we understand they still caused frustration. As a gesture of goodwill, £50 was refunded after your stay. We take guest comfort seriously and do our utmost to resolve any concerns quickly. Many guests enjoy Chapel Cottage without experiencing this natural occurrence, and we are confident in the property’s cleanliness, maintenance, and charm. Kind Regards The Sweetcombe Team
