October Half Term 2024 in Devon: Unforgettable Autumn Adventures Await!

As October’s crisp air settles in and the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold, it’s the perfect time to escape to the stunning Devon coast. The October half-term (19th October to 3rd November 2024) promises plenty of family-friendly fun, adventure, and relaxation. If you’re staying in one of our beautiful Sweetcombe cottages this autumn, here’s a glimpse of the exciting events and activities you can enjoy in the local area.

  1. The Donkey Sanctuary Halloween Spooktacular

Just a short drive from many of our cottages, The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth offers a delightful mix of education and entertainment. The trick or trot trail  features spooky trails and Halloween-themed treats. It’s a great day out for all ages, with the added bonus of meeting the sanctuary’s adorable residents!

  1. Pumpkin trail at Heron Farm, Honiton

Navigate your way around Heron Farm to find the hidden pumpkins and spell out a mystery word. Throughout the October half-term – 21 to 29 October 2024, join in the Pumpkin Trail and gather an Autumn harvest of happy memories navigating your way around Heron Farm to find the hidden Pumpkins, each with a clue to the mystery word! Meet back at the café once you’ve completed the Pumpkin Trail and discovered the word and collect your prize!

  1. Crealy Spook-Fest

There’s a host of fearsome activities on at Crealy Adventure Park & Resort during October half term on selected dates between 19th October- 3rd November. Expect Halloween shows in the arena, the Creaky Hotel, a scarecrow maze and a free pumpkin for every child. Half term is also an opportunity to visit Sooty Land which is great for younger visitors.

  1. Powderham Castle’s Pumpkin Carving

A short drive from our cottages, Powderham Castle hosts its annual Pumpkin Carving during October half term from 27th – 31st October. For just £3 per pumpkin enjoy a 1 hour session to enjoy in some Halloween fun. Carving kits are provided and dogs are welcome.

  1. Seaton Tramway: Trick or Treat Tram

For a truly magical experience, hop aboard the Seaton Tramway for its Trick or Treat Tram event from 30th October- 3rd November. This bewitching tram ride transports you through East Devon’s stunning countryside while offering spellbinding stories, creepy characters, and a spooky adventure that the whole family will enjoy.

  1. Bicton Park Botanical Gardens

Enjoy the last of the autumn sunshine with a visit to Bicton Park Botanical Gardens. Their half-term Halloween pumpkin trail offers a great activity for families, plus plenty of opportunity to explore the beautiful gardens. Wander through the glasshouses, stroll beside the lake, or let the kids burn off some energy in the adventure playground.

  1. Jurassic Coast Walks and Fossil Hunting

October is a wonderful time for a walk along the Jurassic Coast. The weather is cooler but still pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the iconic cliffs and beaches. Head to Charmouth or Lyme Regis for some fossil hunting – a fun activity for children and adults alike. Don’t forget to stop by the Jurassic Discovery centre in Seaton to learn more about the fascinating fossils you may find!

  1. Exmouth’s Autumn Adventure Days

For families with active kids, Exmouth offers a host of exciting outdoor activities. Why not try your hand at paddleboarding, kite surfing or wing-surfing with Edge Watersports? October’s breezes are perfect for water sports, and the stunning Exmouth beach is a great spot for a family day out. If you’d prefer something a little more relaxed, enjoy a scenic boat trip along the River Exe with Stuart Line Cruises and take in the views of the autumn countryside.

  1. Local Markets and Seasonal Food

Autumn in Devon brings a wealth of delicious local produce. Pick up some freshly baked goods, local cheeses, and seasonal fruits and vegetables to enjoy back at your Sweetcombe cottage. Or treat yourself to a meal at one of the region’s excellent pubs or restaurants, where hearty seasonal menus will be brimming with Devon’s finest ingredients.
