Discover Route 3 of the South West 660 with Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays

At Sweetcombe Cottage Holidays, we’re always looking for ways to help our guests experience the very best of the South West—and we’re thrilled to have partnered with the South West 660, a spectacular coastal driving route that showcases the most stunning and diverse landscapes the region has to offer.

The full route runs for 660 miles from Poole in Dorset to Watchet in Somerset, hugging the South West coastline and revealing hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, charming seaside towns and unforgettable views at every turn.

We’re proud to be based along Route 3, which covers the beautiful stretch between Lyme Regis to Exeter, a journey packed with coastal charm, maritime heritage, and foodie delights.

Why drive Route 3?

Route 3 of the South West 660 offers an unforgettable journey along the East Devon and South Devon coastline, taking in the dramatic red cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, sandy beaches, river estuaries and picturesque harbours. It’s the perfect combination of scenic driving and immersive exploration—with plenty of chances to hop out, breathe the sea air, and enjoy the slower pace of life that Devon is known for.

Whether you’re a walker, a wild swimmer, a paddleboarder, or simply someone who loves a good cream tea by the water, there’s something for everyone on this route.

Stay with Sweetcombe along the way

Our hand-picked holiday cottages are dotted along Route 3, offering everything from cosy coastal apartments to stylish family homes—perfect for stopping off and soaking up the surroundings. Each property is a base to rest, recharge and explore more of this stunning section of the South West 660.

Here are a few of our favourite stopovers:

  • Beer & Branscombe– Two of East Devon’s most picturesque villages, rich in coastal character. Stay just steps from the shore in one of our charming Branscombe beach chalets, perfect for a unique seaside adventure. Or unwind at Spring Cottage in Beer, a beautifully styled cottage tucked in the heart of the village—ideal for exploring cliff walks, cosy pubs, and artisan shops.
  • Sidmouth – A Regency seaside town that’s all charm and no fuss. Our cottages in Sidmouth are perfect for enjoying the beach, walking the coast path, or pottering in the independent shops and cafés.
  • Budleigh Salterton – A hidden gem with a laid-back feel. Walk the pebbled beach, enjoy a local ice cream, and return to a cottage that feels like home.
  • Exmouth – The gateway to the Jurassic Coast, with golden beaches and fantastic water sports. Enjoy marina side accommodation with easy parking, or Toller House & Lark Rise offering a larger space with beautiful gardens perfect for four legged friends.
  • Topsham & surrounding villages – On the edge of the Exe Estuary, Topsham offers a mix of coastal and country charm, with wonderful pubs, walks, and birdwatching opportunities.

Each of our properties is locally managed with care, and we’re always here to help with recommendations, whether it’s where to get the best fish and chips or which coastal walk offers the best sunset views.
